Ground Search & Rescue Course

About the Ground Search & Rescue Course

Ground Search & Rescue training is to standards set by the Provincial Emergency Program of BC. This allows SAR volunteers to be covered by WorkSafe BC when training and when responding to calls. The Justice Institute of British Columbia (JIBC) develops most of the training and course materials to meet those standards.

The Ground Search & Rescue, or GSAR course, is designed to teach volunteers to safety and effectively conduct ground and inland waterway searches and/or rescues. The GSAR course will build knowledge and skills in the following areas:

Search Organization
Wilderness navigation
Survival Skills
Basic Rope Management
Helicopter Safety
Subject Evacuation
Communication Skills

Beyond a clear criminal record check, there are no prerequisites, though a level of physical fitness is recommended. The GSAR course is taught by volunteer instructors within the group, so there are no course fees. People who take the course are asked to give back to the group by attending practice sessions, searches and participating in fundraising and PR events.

We are currently not accepting new members.
